In the game's second expansion, Path of Fire, mounts were added to Guild Wars 2. Several launched with that expansion, while others have been added later. The Skyscale was added during the fourth season of the Living World, much later. It's considered to be the best mount available in the game — and here, we detail how to get one of your very own. Updated April 28, 2022, by Gabrielle Huston: We know that the process of getting a Skyscale is difficult and time-consuming. Our guide should be the easiest part! We've updated it to be a smooth read and to give you all the information you need.

Guide To The Skyscale Stacking Achievements In Guild Wars 2

If you're new to Guild Wars 2 or are a returning player who hasn't logged on in years, you may need a bit of help understanding how to unlock the mount.

As with many things in Guild Wars 2, the Skyscale mount is earned by completing a chain of achievements.

• To unlock those achievements, you must complete all the story quests in the Living World season called 'War Eternal.'

There are five "hub" achievements, which are the titles of the headers in this guide. Each of those achievements looks like an item collection achievement. That doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be collecting items. Usually, there are "sub-achievements" to do and completing a sub-achievement will award one of the items for the hub achievement. Sub-achievements are named in the subheadings of this article, when applicable.

Got all that? Then you're ready to start!

1. Newborn Skyscales

Step 1: Gorrik in Dragonfall

Once you've finished the War Eternal quests, you'll be able to find Gorrik on the Dragonfall map, to the South. If you have trouble, refer to the map above.

Step 2: Skyscale Scales Collection

You'll start by running around Dragonfall picking up Scales — there are 21 in total.

Step 3: Skyscale Medicine Collection

The medicines you need are all purchased from vendors in Dragonfall. The first two can be purchased as soon as you get the achievement: Stabilized Brandstorm Flux and Tincture of Volatile Magic. Just talk to the Traveling Elonian Trader; they stand right behind the Pact Command Waypoint (as indicated by the star on the map above).

The next three medicines are purchased from merchants in the Pact Command as well — their locations are marked with stars above — but you don't have access to them right away. To get access to their stock, you'll need to complete ten events in their associated region of Dragonfall. Doing this will complete an achievement.

Step 4: Gorrik in Dragonfall

At this stage, you'll need to return to Gorrik again and report what you've learned. He can be found in the same place as last time (marked on the map above).

Step 5: Skyscale Fever Collection

Next, you must heal the sick Skyscales all across the map. There are fewer items to track down: 14.

Step 6: Gorrik in Dragonfall

Return to Gorrik once you've administered medicine to all the Skyscales (refer to the map above if you've forgotten where he is after all your running around).

Step 7: Skyscale Eggs Collection

Finally, you'll go back to Gorrik one last time. He's still in the same place. After conversing with him, you'll get an effect called "Waiting for Gorrik" — you'll be able to continue the Skyscale achievements when that effect has run out.

2. Saving Skyscales

You need to wait two hours before continuing the quest. After that, you'll get a message from Gorrik saying that he's in Sun's Refuge.

Start by going there. Once you've spoken to him, the achievement Saving Skyscales will be unlocked. It requires you to do 12 collection achievements:

• Skyscale of Water
• Skyscale of Fire
• Skyscale of Ice
• Skyscale of Earth
• Skyscale of Air
• Skyscale of Life
• Skyscale of Blood
• Skyscale of Growth
• Skyscale of Death
• Skyscale of Fear
• Skyscale of Courage

Each collection contains several items that are scattered across Tyria for you to find. Though you could do one collection achievement after another, that would take you on a lot of backtracking. Instead, collect them in this order to acquire all the items without too much hassle.

There's a feature in which a small marker is placed on the map to show you where the achievement destination is. If you're ever lost in a map, just look for that on your minimap.

6	The Nature of Life	Skyscale of Life	Divinity's Reach	The in-game hint: "Speak with the Priestess of Dwayna at the Plaza of Dwayna in Divinity's Reach." After talking to the Priestess, she'll give you the effect "Dwayna's Directive."

15	The Nature of Water	Skyscale of Water	Domain of Vabbi	To get this one, you must activate an event at the Hanging Gardens called "Defeat the grand elder djinn." To do that, you'll need to defeat eight lesser djinns on the map of Vabbi. They are each marked by a Mastery Point, making them easy to find. Each time you defeat one, a brazier is lit in the Hanging Gardens. When all eight are lit, the Elder Djinns will appear. Talk to Grand Elder Water Djinn Khiafe and prompt them to expose your egg to the nature of water.
16	The Nature of Fire	Skyscale of Fire	Domain of Vabbi	To get this one, you must activate an event at the Hanging Gardens called "Defeat the grand elder djinn." To do that, you'll need to defeat eight lesser djinns on the map of Vabbi. They are each marked by a Mastery Point, making them easy to find. Each time you defeat one, a brazier is lit in the Hanging Gardens. When all eight are lit, the Elder Djinns will appear. Talk to Grand Elder Fire Djinn Naayih and prompt them to expose your egg to the nature of fire.
17	The Nature of Earth	Skyscale of Earth	Domain of Vabbi	To get this one, you must activate an event at the Hanging Gardens called "Defeat the grand elder djinn." To do that, you'll need to defeat eight lesser djinns on the map of Vabbi. They are each marked by a Mastery Point, making them easy to find. Each time you defeat one, a brazier is lit in the Hanging Gardens. When all eight are lit, the Elder Djinns will appear. Talk to Grand Elder Earth Djinn Bhozu and prompt them to expose your egg to the nature of earth.
18	The Nature of Air	Skyscale of Air	Domain of Vabbi	To get this one, you must activate an event at the Hanging Gardens called "Defeat the grand elder djinn." To do that, you'll need to defeat eight lesser djinns on the map of Vabbi. They are each marked by a Mastery Point, making them easy to find. Each time you defeat one, a brazier is lit in the Hanging Gardens. When all eight are lit, the Elder Djinns will appear. Talk to Grand Elder Air Djinn Dhizosai and prompt them to expose your egg to the nature of air.
19	The Nature of Death	Skyscale of Death	Domain of Vabbi	The in-game hint: "Speak with Sister Lissa at the Necropolis in the Domain of Vabbi."
20	Fires of a God	Skyscale of Fire	Domain of Vabbi	Enter the Foundry in the Domain of Vabbi by breaking down the door and heading underground. All you need to do is stand for a moment in one of the big forges at the very bottom of this area (the smaller ones higher up won't do).
21	Sands of Vabbi	Skyscale of Earth	Domain of Vabbi	The in-game hint: "Take damage from quicksand in the Domain of Vabbi."
22	Winds of the Waste	Skyscale of Air	Domain of Vabbi	The in-game hint: "Get knocked down by a Dust Mite Twister, commonly found in arid desert-like areas." You'll find some of those opponents in the Eastern Mihan Hillsides but they appear all over the map and any of them will do.
23	Growth of Artichokes	Skyscale of Growth	Domain of Vabbi	The in-game hint: "Place your Skyscale egg in the dirt of the artichoke patch at the Necropolis in the Domain of Vabbi." You can easily identify the artichoke patch because it'll look like a clump of herb nodes on your minimap.
24	Glossophobia	Skyscale of Fear	Domain of Vabbi	To accomplish this, you need to go to the Vehtendi Academy. There's a heart quest there, and a lecture hall full of students being taught by a servant of Joko. Usually, you can just talk to the students, but every once in a while the event "Speak from the lectern to lecture against Joko's brainwashing before the instructor arrives" will appear. Participating in that event by interacting with the podium and teaching the class the true information is how you can get this collectable. The event spawns every 15 minutes or so; just wait around for it.
25	Astraphobia	Skyscale of Fear	Domain of Vabbi	The in-game hint: "Get hit by a Brandstorm." Technically, you need to be hit by lightning while you have the effect "Fury of the Brand" on you. This is easy enough to accomplish, and you may do it by accident anyway. If you're looking for where to go to get it, though, head to the east.
26	Courage in Face of Shattered Faith	Skyscale of Courage	Domain of Vabbi	To earn this, you just need to go to King Joko's Sky Garden and find the place where you're prompted to share your story with your Skyscale egg. You'll probably need your springer in order to get up to the top. Your character will do a short animation.
27	Growth of Carrots	Skyscale of Growth	The Desolation	The in-game hint: "Hint: Place your Skyscale egg in the dirt of the carrot patch at the Bonestrand in the Desolation." You can easily identify the carrot patch because it'll look like a clump of herb nodes on your minimap.
28	Death of the Conquered	Skyscale of Death	The Desolation	The in-game hint: "Visit the dead at the Bone Palace in the Desolation." You just need to visit Joko's Throne in the Bone Palace. You should be able to reach it fine most of the time but, if the local event is active, you may have to wait it out or follow it into the throne room. Next to the throne is the place where you're prompted to take out your Skyscale egg. Your character will do a short animation.
29	Growth of Cauliflower	Skyscale of Growth	Elon Riverlands	The in-game hint: "Place your Skyscale egg in the dirt of the cauliflower patch at Elon Flow in Elon Riverlands." You can easily identify the cauliflower patch because it'll look like a clump of herb nodes on your minimap.
30	Death of the Exile	Skyscale of Death	Elon Riverlands	The in-game hint: "Visit the dead at Exile's Rest in Elon Riverlands."

36	Spirit of the Hero	Skyscale of Spirit	Desert Highlands	The in-game hint: "Visit Prophet's Fall in Desert Highlands." The place where you're prompted to take out your Skyscale egg is on top of a floating crystal in this Branded Crater. You'll probably need a Springer to reach it. Your character will do a short animation.
37	Death of the Kings	Skyscale of Death	Desert Highlands	The in-game hint: "Visit the dead at the Tomb of Primeval Kings in Desert Highlands." The place where you're prompted to take out your Skyscale egg is near the POI "The Portal." Your character will do a short animation.
38	Ice of the Land	Skyscale of Ice	Desert Highlands	The in-game hint: "Expose your Skyscale egg to the icy chamber in Derelict Delve in Desert Highlands." To get this one, you'll need to solve the puzzle of the Derelict Delve and its Rune-Locked Doors. The first room is the Ice Room, where you can earn this.
39	Waters of Derelict Delve	Skyscale of Water	Desert Highlands	The in-game hint: "Swim in the water chamber in Derelict Delve in Desert Highlands." To get this one, you'll need to solve the puzzle of the Derelict Delve and its Rune-Locked Doors. The very last room is the water room, where you can earn this.
40	Fires of the Depths	Skyscale of Fire	Desert Highlands	The in-game hint: "Get burned by lava in the fire chamber in Derelict Delve in Desert Highlands." To get this one, you'll need to solve the puzzle of the Derelict Delve and its Rune-Locked Doors. The second room is the lava room, where you can earn this.
41	Alektorophobia	Skyscale of Fear	Fields of Ruin	The in-game hint: "Get attacked by angry chickens at Ebonhawke in Fields of Ruin." In the south of Ebonhawke, there's a farm with chickens. The chickens are immortal but if you attack them for long enough, a new chicken called "Angry Chicken" will appear. Take damage to receive this one.
42	Acrophobia	Skyscale of Fear	Blazeridge Steppes	The in-game hint: "Get to the very top of the wall in Blazeridge Steppes." This one's a bit tricky - you'll need to make a series of careful jumps with your Springer mount in order to reach the highest part of the wall (where the wall chunks are floating).
43	Fires of the Legion	Skyscale of Fire	Black Citadel	The in-game hint: "Get burned by lava in the Great Imperial Smelter in the Black Citadel."
44	Waters of Castavall	Skyscale of Water	Bloodtide Coast	The in-game hint: "Swim to the bottom of Flooded Castavall in Bloodtide Coast."
45	Fires of the Mountain	Skyscale of Fire	Mount Maelstrom	The in-game hint: "Get burned by lava within Mount Maelstrom."
46	Winds of the Garden	Skyscale of Air	Mount Maelstrom	The in-game hint: "Interact with the Cluster of Winds in the Hidden Garden jumping puzzle in Mount Maelstrom." 3. Raising Skyscales

Step 1: Gorrik in Sun's Refuge

Just like last time, you'll need to wait two hours after completing the last step (Saving Skyscales). Then, you'll get a letter from Gorrik asking you to visit him in Sun's Refuge. That'll unlock the first part of the Raising Skyscales achievement: A New Life. Your Skyscale will hatch from its egg and then you'll talk to Gorrik again to earn: A New Parent. You'll need to complete three small collections next.

Step 2: Skyscale Treats

For this collection, you need to hunt down animals across Tyria for their meat. The trophy isn't guaranteed but will easily drop after you've killed a few of the NPCs.

Step 2: Skyscale Care

There are 13 stages of the Skyscale Care achievement. You earn one for each item of food you give to your Skyscale. When you've earned the treats from the previous step, return to Sun's Refuge to feed those treats to the Skyscale (you must have them in your inventory). You'll only be able to do this four times each day (reset marks the new day), so it'll take at least three days to complete it.

Step 4: Skyscale Toys

You'll have to buy four toys from merchants around Tyria for your Skyscale to play with. The final item, the Grow Lamp, is purchased from another player on the Black Lion Trading House unless you happen to be a fully trained Jeweler.

Step 5: Gorrik in Sun's Refuge

After completing all the previous steps, talk to Gorrik again. He'll tell you he will keep an eye on your Skyscale as she grows up.

4. Troublesome Skyscales

Step 1: Gorrik in Sun's Refuge

When two hours have passed since you finished the Raising Skyscales achievement, you'll get a message and be prompted to visit Gorrik in Sun's Refuge again.

Step 2: Skyscale Lost Collection

When your Skyscale runs off, it's your duty to track her down all over Tyria. Many of the locations involve a jumping puzzle or completing a world boss.

If you don't want to physically track her down, you can just go to the associated map and use an "Extra-Pungent Skyscale Treat," an item that can be purchased from the Black Lion Trading Company or crafted by a level 300 chef.

Step 3: Gorrik in Sun's Refuge

When you've sufficiently hunted down your Skyscale, return to Gorrik.

Step 4: Skyscale Stealth Collection and Skyscale Reflexes Collection

There are two more Collections to finish in order to complete this achievement, but they're rather simple so we've combined the step. In Sun's Refuge, you'll be able to play two mini-games with your Skyscale — Hide-and-Seek and Catch. You need to play and win each game three times, each time at a more challenging difficulty setting.

Step 6: Gorrik in Sun's Refuge

Return to Gorrik again.

5. Riding Skyscales

Step 1: Gorrik in Sun's Refuge

For the last time, you must wait two hours. After that, you get a final letter from Gorrik asking you to return to see him in Sun's Refuge.

Step 2: Skyscale Saddle Collection

You need to purchase a series of items that Gorrik can combine into the saddle. You might be thinking that at least it's not another collection you have to run around for, but we promise that this one will still be a chore. That's because you'll need lots of map-specific currencies to buy the items.

Step 3: Gorrik in the Jahai Bluffs

Gorrik will have moved, this time — hunt him down and talk to him in the Jahai Bluffs.

Step 4: Skyscale Flight Collection

You'll need to take Skyscale flying lessons before they let you off on your own. Head to each of the following maps and look for the "Lesson Node" to start. If you do the lessons in the following order, one after another, it's the cheapest because you're not Waypointing so far away.

The star icon on the maps indicates where you'll find the Lesson Node and the treasure chest icon on the maps indicates the end of the lesson.

Once all that's done — congratulations! You have your very own Skyscale flying mount.
