A Toronto mother was shaken up after her 3-year-old son locked himself and his infant brother inside the family's sweltering minivan.
The incident happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of Kiddie Proofers — a store specializing in childproofing gear — on Dufferin Street near Lawrence Avenue West. Temperatures in the GTA were expected to creep up to a muggy 30C, according to Environment Canada. With the humidity, it felt more like 40C.
Police said the boys (the second is three months old) were locked in after the eldest hit the master lock that when activated secures the entire car. Her keys were resting on the front passenger seat.
The toddler and the three-month-old were rescued after 15 minutes and were in good condition but needed a few minutes to cool off minutes in the back of an ambulance, police said.
Let this be a lesson for the guardians of young children, said Const. Wendy Drummond: "Always have your keys with you. Yes, people forget their keys once in a while," she said. "However, make it a practice to always know where they are."
The mother had dropped in to have her car seats checked, said Sharalyn Crossfield, the store's resident car seat specialist.
With the inspection complete and both boys buckled securely in the backseat, the mother slid the doors shut, unaware that her eldest had hit the master lock accidentally when she was busy strapping in her youngest.
When the realization hit, she was inconsolable.
"She was crying. She was a mom in distress," said Ms. Crossfield, a mother of four herself.
"She said 'Oh my gosh, I locked the kids in the car,' and that's when we sprung into action to get the cars unlocked."
While store employees called police, the mother flagged down a tow truck on Dufferin Street. The driver smashed a window. The children were frightened and crying, cheeks flushed, as they were pulled from the car.
This summer, two Canadian children died after being left unattended in hot cars by their guardians.
Milton, Ont. toddler Maximus Huyskens, who died June 26 after being left unattended in a car as temperatures crept up to 29 C. Maximus was in the care of his maternal grandmother, Leslie McDonald, at the time, who was later charged with criminal negligence causing death, as well as failure to provide the necessities of life.
In Edmonton, a three-year-old girl died after being left in a car outside a townhouse complex. Police have ruled out criminal charges in that instance.
Shortly after Wednesday's incident, Kiddie Proofers put in orders for car safety kits that include glass breakers and special seatbelt cutters. The kits, which retail for about $20, are essential for anyone looking after young children, according to Ms. Crossfield.
"This could literally happen to anyone," she said. "Children do this stuff all the time."
Const. Drummond's advises against leaving children unattended in cars. If it's unavoidable, make sure it's only for a short length of time and to leave a door unlocked and a window part of the way down.
"That way if you do leave your keys in the car, the car is ventilated while you attempt to get some sort of device into the lock tow."
